Capitol Drive Construction Slated to Begin

State transportation officials plan to make improvements on Capitol Drive, with one lane of Capitol Drive closed during day and two lanes closed overnight.

Put down that coffee cup, Capitol Drive motorists. It's time to pay more attention to the road because orange cones will be going up soon. Five miles of Capitol Drive from Mayfair Road west to Brookfield Road will undergo construction this year, with work slated to begin as early as next week, City of Brookfield Public Works Director Tom Grisa told Patch Friday. However, with Friday's snow, that could be pushed back. The first segment will be all in Wauwatosa, from Mayfair Road west to the border with Brookfield at North 124th Street. Two of the three existing lanes will remain open for traffic from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the construction project. But overnight, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., there will be only one open lane in each direction. …

Construction Planned on Capitol Drive Next Year

State transportation officials plan to make improvements along Capitol Drive from Mayfair Road west to Brookfield Road, but the state highway will remain open during the project.

Construction barrels will line Capitol Drive from Mayfair Road west to Brookfield Road next year, as state transportation officials improve the five-mile stretch from April to October. Two of the three existing lanes will remain open for traffic in each direction of Capitol Drive from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the construction project. From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., one lane in each direction will remain open.  According to plans presented at a public information meeting Tuesday night at the Brookfield Public Safety Building, the work will be broken down into three segments, starting with the stretch of Capitol Drive from Mayfair Road to the 124th Street border that divides Brookfield and Wauwatosa. This project to rebuild Capitol Drive is long overdue. Yes, Summer 2012 will be a pain in the neck since this is SUCH a key corridor, but it didn't need to be this way. We have enhanced virtually ZERO east-west or north-south street-level corridors so there are true alternatives to a single corridor like Capitol Drive, and we're still fighting over how to enhance/modernize our underbuilt freeway …   more ›
