Nominations are being accepted for the Wauwatosa Citizen of the Year for 2012. Since 1964, the Wauwatosa Distinguished Citizen Award Council has annually recognized individuals who have made a distinguished contribution to the community life of Wauwatosa. The 2012 Citizen of the Year recognition is planned for April 24 at Bluemound Country Club, 10122 W. North Ave. Nominations may be made by any person, group or organization, but self-nomination will not be accepted. The required nomination forms are available at the City Clerk’s office in City Hall, or you may email Patrick McNally at patrick.mcnally82@gmail.com for an electronic copy. "About time!" "What were they waiting for?" "There's nobody more deserving." Those and other words of praise were uttered off-the-cuff when it was announced at a recent gathering that Denise Lindberg would be recognized as Wauwatosa's 2011 Distinguished Citizen. What were they waiting for? Actually, some of those who know her well say that Lindberg didn't want – or even believe she deserved – any recognition before her signature project, Tosa Pool at Hoyt Park, was completed, open and running. All that happened last spring and summer. The pool had a wildly successful opening season, and now, perhaps, Lindberg can accept her due from a grateful community. If you know someone whose contributions to Wauwatosa go far beyond the normal specter of community service, it's time to nominate them for the 2011 Distinguished Citizen Award. The Wauwatosa Distinguished Citizen Award Council has presented the honor annually since 1964. According to the nomination form, candidates "shall have made significant voluntary contributions to community life in Wauwatosa" and need not be residents of the city to qualify. Former Wauwatosa School District teacher Carolyn Dressler was the 2010 recipient. Nominations are due Jan. 11, 2012 and the award will be presented in April.
