Claiming high-ranking connections but unable to get a ride home, Milwaukee man attempts to burn the mattress in his holding cell.
The reports are in on a drunken driving task force sweep last weekend, and a couple of them are doozies. A 25-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested first for drunken driving and then for arson last Sunday after he tried to set a fire in his holding cell at the Wauwatosa police station. Twice, officers left him with a lighter in his pocket, once inadvertantly, and they paid the price later when he tried to ignite the mattress in his cell. As you might expect, police holding cells are equipped with flame-retardant “Flame Check” bedding, and the man never came close to starting a blaze. Nevertheless, the department did forward the case to the District Attorney's office with a request for an arson charge, but after review the DA reduced that to …

Home care provider finds that a client was in no position to benefit for the assistance her caregiver was billing for.
Police were seeking a 49-year-old Milwaukee woman on suspicion of fraud after the human resources manager for Celestial Caregivers, 12201 W. North Ave., reported Thursday that the she had submitted suspect claims. Celestial matches up home caregivers with those in need of help maintaining independent living, and where possible enlists close relatives in the expectation that they will already be imbued with familial compassion. Caregivers are reimbursed for their time through accepted insurers, including Medicaid. Celestial staffers make visits to interview both caregivers and clients to ensure that needs are being met. The woman in question was the assigned caregiver for her 61-year-old sister. But a routine call to schedule a home visit …

Among other incidents, a man picks up a large metal mailbox for scrap, then has second thoughts. He calls to make sure it was discarded. It wasn't, and the quality of mercy is strained.
Trust is good. Misplaced trust will cost you. At 2:41 p.m. Tuesday, a resident of the 2200 block of North 67th Street reported that his work van had been stolen by a man who came to purchase it for scrap. The thief persuaded the owner to sign over the title before he took the van for a “test drive,” without handing over any money. After the stranger failed to return for several minutes, the owner called his cell phone and demanded he bring the van back. The man refused and told him he could “call the cops,” which he did. Police were unable to contact the man by phone. They alerted scrap yards to be on the lookout for the van. In other incidents: Thursday A Brookfield woman reported that a window was smashed out of her car while it was …

A large number of young teens from Tosa and nearby communities were having quite a get-together Saturday night, including alcohol and, apparently, marijuana, when the police showed up. As a result, three boys, a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old from Wauwatosa and a 15-year-old from West Allis, were arrested for underage drinking in the 1100 block of Honey Creek Parkway, and several girls were questioned and released. At 10:53 p.m., a patrol officer spotted a boy and girl walking near Chestnut St. and Kavanaugh Place. They ran when they saw him, and he chased them down Dewey Hill to find a gathering of about 20 kids at the bottom, most of whom also scattered. Two girls, a Wauwatosa 14-year-old and an Elm Grove 15-year-old, remained and were …

The Canadian Pacific Railroad may want to consider putting crossing gates across its own rails in Wauwatosa that stay down until a train comes through. Last week, we reported that a man had been arrested for drunken driving after he turned onto the railroad tracks off Harwood Avenue in the Village. And this week, we can report that it happened again nearby, this time at North 68th and West State streets, with a 24-year-old Cudahy woman at the wheel, who is now facing her second drunken driving offense. According to the police report: At a little before 9 p.m. last Thursday, a Wauwatosa police officer was in the parking lot of Metcalfe's Sentry Foods, 6700 W. State St., when he heard a strange noise and looked up to see a car driving east …

A Wauwatosa resident who was brought to a rude awakening in the wee hours Monday called police after he heard and saw a car pass his Swan Park home streaming sparks and screeching like a banshee. He told officers he awoke after 3 a.m. to his dogs' wild barking – no doubt their sensitive ears were already hurting – and then heard a “horrible loud scraping” growing closer. He looked out from his home in the 9300 block of Wilson Boulevard to see a late-'90s Camaro pass by, riding, he said, on at least two and possibly three wheel rims and lighting up the street with showers of sparking metal. At 3:19 a.m., Wauwatosa police found the car stopped in the 9800 block of Ridge Boulevard, just short of reaching Menomonee River Parkway. The car had …

Wauwatosa police were out in force Friday to monitor sobriety on the Brewers' Opening Day, and their night ended with a situation that might have seemed amusing if it weren't so dangerous. At 10:36 p.m., a 26-year-old Oconomowoc man was arrested for drunken driving, first offense, after he drove onto the railroad tracks east of Harwood Avenue in the Village and got stuck. A caller from Cafe Hollander told police he had been sitting in the lower level of the restaurant when he saw the driver turn up the tracks and drive about 50 feet before stalling. He said he was watching the man reeling drunkenly and yelling about his plight while he tried to push his car off the tracks. Police had to alert the Canadian Pacific to shut down the line …

Two incidents a block apart involved forced entry by kicking in service doors of detached garages.
A small area of East Tosa was targeted Wednesday by a burglar or burglars apparently looking for older, detached garages. A resident of the 2700 block of North 74th Street reported that between 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., someone kicked in the side door of his detached garage, breaking the wooden door frame. Nothing was taken because the homeowner had locked down everything of value with steel cables. At 12:20 p.m., a resident of the 2700 block of North 73rd Street reported that he had just seen a man enter a neighbor’s detached garage through the service door, which appeared to him to have been unlocked, and leave with a push lawn mower. The owner assured police the door had been locked, and it was found to have been kicked in, ripping the …
