What the Heck Is That Smell? Scrapyard Fire Odor Pervades Wauwatosa

Acrid smell came from junkyard in the Valley, which burned for hours producing haze and obnoxious odors.

People leaving what was kind of a stinky Opening Day game loss Friday by the Brewers to the St. Louis Cardinals were treated to a nasty dessert of acrid smoke, and a foul pall settled on the rest of Wauwatosa in the hours to come. Assistant Fire Chief Bill Rice of the Wauwatosa Fire Department said the sick smell and haze was from a massive fire at Miller Compressing Co., a scrapyard in the Menomonee Valley at 1640 W. Bruce St., which caught fire about 5:30 p.m. and burned for hours. Rice said he had heard from residents as far west in Wauwatosa as the County Grounds, and reports also came from Brookfield. Rice said that sometimes such a fire would be contained but not fought overly aggressively because firefighters would not know what all…

Fire Department Faced Flames Twice in Same Day

Blaze started outside vacant building but became involved inside as well before firefighters extinguished it.

The Wauwatosa Fire Department had a busy day Wednesday with two serious structure fires breaking out. After battling a 3:30 a.m. blaze that consumed a garage and damaged two more, firefighters were called out again later in the day for a fire that started outside a vacant commercial building at 2578 Wauwatosa Ave. The flames were intense enough that the fire extended rapidly to the inside of the building. While Wauwatosa units fought the fire, mutual aid units from Brookfield, West Allis and Elm Grove sent companies to staff Tosa fire stations, and they answered two calls while Tosa attended to the building fire. The cause of the second fire, like the first, remains undetermined at this time. The building on Wauwatosa Avenue sustained an …

Firefighters Battle Hot Garage Blaze in the Wee Hours

Heavy flames greet fire crews, damage nearby structures as well.

An early morning fire Wednesday destroyed the garage where it started and damaged two others nearby, a Wauwatosa Fire Department official said. Firefighters were called at 3:32 a.m. to fight a structure fire in the 8000 block of West Chestnut Street, said Deputy Fire Chief Jim Case. The first units to arrive found a detached garage burning with a large volume of smoke and fire. Two other nearby garages and an automobile were also damaged by the fire. Fire units were on the scene for about two hours extinguishing the fire and performing an investigation. WE Energies was asked to assist with a number of downed power lines and a threatened transformer. Some homes in the area were still without power when firefighters had cleared the scene. No…

Fire Victim Positively Identified; Death Ruled an Accident

Victim was indeed John K. Lorentz. New details reveal possible source of spent shotgun shells as being from a decorative plaque.

The sound of gunshots that sent firefighters scurrying from a possible rescue in a fire last week might have come from live shotgun shells glued to a decorative plaque made by the victim's father. The body of a man found in a burned-out Wauwatosa home last week has been positively identified as that of John K. Lorentz, the son of the homeowner, and his death has been ruled an accident. According to just-released police reports, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office found that Lorentz died of "thermal injuries" – burns – and "consumption of combustive products." "That's a fancy way of saying 'smoke inhalation," said forensic investigator Michael Simley of the examiner's office. Toxicology reports that will take four to six weeks …

Body Found in Wauwatosa Home Destroyed by Fire

Police say they can't identify the victim, but it is believed to be a man who lived in the home with his elderly mother.

A body was discovered this afternoon in a burned-out home on North 119th Street that was the site of a morning fire, Wauwatosa police said. Police say they are unable to identify the victim because of the condition of the body, but neighbors say it may have been the adult son of an elderly woman who lived at the home at 1430 N. 119th St. While police said they couldn't identify the body, they acknowledged that the man who lived at the home is unaccounted for. The fire was reported at 8:57 a.m. by neighbors who saw smoke and flames pouring from the second floor of the home. One neighbor reportedly raced to the home and met the homeowner, identified as Jean Lorentz, a woman in her late 70s, coming out the front door in her pajamas. Lorentz …

Micheal, perhaps it's best that you keep your guess's to yourself. I've known John for over 30 years. You sound like an over opinionated wanna-be detective. Try taking the position of talking about things you know about for a fact. This is what I think!   more ›
