If It Sounds Too Good to Be True, It's Probably Going to Cost You

Two women say they were told this check-cashing thing was 'legit,' but it turns out to cost the a bundle.

Two women, one from Wauwatosa and one from Milwaukee, went to the police station Tuesday to report that they had been duped into a fraudulent check-cashing scheme. They explained to police that an acquaintance had asked them to cash some checks for her and her companion, that they would be given a share of the money, and it was all “legal” and “legit.” Despite some misgivings, they did so, on three occasions, at their own banks, cashing checks for $3,000, $4,000 and $6,000, turning over the money to their acquaintances, and receiving about 10 percent in return. Later, they were notified by their banks that the checks hadn’t cleared and that their own accounts had been debited $4,000 and $9,000 respectively. Police are seeking a known …

Two on Cleaning Crew Cleared Out Property, Police Say

Scheme to make hay from items taken from businesses in large office building unravels quickly, but each accomplice tries just as swiftly to deflect blame on the other, according to detectives.

A man and woman from Milwaukee who worked for a cleaning company took out more than the trash from several Wauwatosa businesses, according to a police investigation, and they are now charged with a variety of crimes. Darius Termaine Walker, 21, and Angela Rena Carnes, 47, were charged last week in Milwaukee County Circuit Court; Walker with felony forgery and two counts of possession of stolen property; Carnes with one misdemeanor count of theft. Their cases were separated because, so to speak, they separated their partnership when police uncovered their cleaning scheme. Each has blamed the other for the most serious of the crimes police say they committed. According to the criminal complaints: Reports of thefts began to trickle in from …

Former Mo's Pub Employee Charged with Embezzling

Server slipped up when a regular customer with a deal to have her card account automatically reloaded found that it hadn't been – and Mo's managers found there was a shady reason for that.

A 28-year-old Greenfield man has been charged with embezzling funds from his employer by using the business' computer system to create fraudulent gift cards, according to a criminal complaint.  Adam C. Podkomerksi was charged April 1 in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with three counts of theft by embezzlement of less than $2,500, a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to nine months in jail. It appears from the evidence in the complaint that Podkomerski had kept up a ruse for more than six months by creating phony gift cards from time to time but not using them for large withdrawals at any one time, making the transactions less noticeable. He slipped up, according to his bosses, the police and prosecutors, when he put money on a phony card…

Police Reports: Celebrating Victory, Obama Voter Gets 1st OWI Ticket

One of two men arrested Wednesday as suspected drunken drivers tells police he had been hoisting a few over the president's re-election before he elected to drive.

Two Milwaukee men were arrested Wednesday on suspicion of driving while drunk on the streets of Wauwatosa, one of whom said he had been toasting President Obama's re-election at a party with friends. At 12:58 a.m. Wednesday – about three hours after media began declaring an Obama victory – a 26-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested after he failed to stop for a flashing red light on Wauwatosa Avenue at Harmonee Avenue in the Village. A patrol officer who saw the infraction pulled up behind the driver as he stopped at the drive-up ATM at Chase Bank, 7430 W. State St. A passenger in the car was holding a 16-ounce beer can when the officer walked up to the car, and the driver launched into a speech about President Obama having won re-election…

Verizon Kiosk Employee Charged in Phone Sale Scam

Defendant's dealings both billed customers for phones they didn't get and undercut his company, according to a police investigation.

An employee at a Mayfair Mall kiosk is facing fraud charges after a police investigation concluded that he conned customers on their agreements to obtain iPhones so he could sell them. John Timothy Evans, 31, of Waukegan, Ill., was charged Saturday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with two counts of theft by fraud. If convicted, he faces up to 18 months in prison and $20,000 in fines. According to the criminal complaint: On Aug. 3, a man went to the Verizon Wireless kiosk in the mall where Evans worked so he could upgrade his cell phone and buy some new accessories. Police Reports: Taco Bell Can't Flush Out Plumbing Thief

For some reason, Mexican fast food chain is being targeted for restroom fixtures, and no one has any leads on the bathroom burglar.

The manager of Taco Bell, 510 N. Mayfair Rd., reported Tuesday that between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., while the restaurant was open and doing business, someone disassembled and stole the flush valve from the toilet in the men’s restroom. He said the thief had shut off the water to the toilet and left no tools or other evidence behind. He reviewed video of people entering and leaving the restaurant during the day, but he said no one stood out for any reason and there were far too many to be worth investigating. He also told police that this has happened at a number of other Taco Bell restaurants recently. The $300 valve was made of chromed brass. In other recent incidents: Thursday Police stopped and questioned a 20-year-old Milwaukee man …

Tightwad Gourmand Gets to Sample Jail's Bill of Fare

I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a large stuffed pizza with everything today, says Waukesha Wimpy. But his record says he makes a habit of overeating and underpaying.

After sitting down alone and ordering enough food for a family at a Wauwatosa pizzeria, a rotund Waukesha man was detained and police were called to arrest him when he couldn't pay his bill. Seem a little harsh? Nope, good call. Turns out he makes a habit of stuffing himself for free. At 9:41 p.m. Monday, the 56-year-old Waukesha man was arrested for fraud on a merchant after he ordered $60.56 worth of food at Edwardo’s Pizza, 10845 Blue Mound Rd., and couldn't pay the bill. A server said she brought the man his check after he finished, and he just sat and stared at it for a long time. Then he checked his wallet and said he had no cash. He tried three credit and debit cards, but all were declined. He asked staff to call a check cashing …

Police Reports: A Short Course from Courtroom to Jail

For some reason, seven summons supplicating woman's attendance at court in Menomonee Falls were ignored, but once Wauwatosa raised its gavel, she groveled.

Who knows what prompted this woman to actually show up in court in Wauwatosa? She doesn't seem to bother when it's Menomonee Falls that calls. At 5:14 p.m. Wednesday, a 37-year-old Milwaukee woman was arrested in Municipal Court at Wauwatosa City Hall for outstanding warrants. The court officer reported her as “a fugitive in attendance” after a Crime Information Bureau check showed she was wanted on seven warrants from the Menomonee Falls Police Department. The report did not say why she was ordered to appear in Wauwatosa Municipal Court – or why she deigned to do so. In other recent incidents: Thursday A 24-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested for theft after he defrauded Curry Park Automotive, 10745 W. Capitol Dr., by presenting a receipt…
