PHOTOS: Black Friday at Mayfair Mall

Cold, windy weather didn't keep shoppers from flocking to mall for big bargains.

When Mayfair Mall opened at midnight Friday, many retailers had long lines, but the crowd overall was orderly. Although many teenagers attempted to gain entry to the mall, security personnel strictly enforced the rules prohibiting unaccompanied minors during certain times of day.

Two Courtroom Regulars Charged in Separate Thefts at Mayfair

Both defendants have extensive criminal backgrounds and pending cases, and one was being sought on a felony warrant for burglary.

Retail theft, even for some repeat offenders, often draws only a municipal citation or at most a low-level criminal misdemeanor charge. But two men arrested over the weekend for thefts at Mayfair Mall are getting the proverbial book thrown at them – in part for what they are accused of stealing but mainly because of their criminal records and current status with the courts. Justin L. Nash, 19 was charged Tuesday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with one count of felony retail theft and one count of felony bail jumping. If convicted, he faces up to 4½ years in prison and $20,000 in fines. Black Friday and Beyond: Long Holiday Hours Set at Mayfair

With an extra-long shopping season ahead, mall extends its hours incrementally up to Christmas and the day after.

Some residents and businesses will start stringing up the Christmas lights as soon as the Halloween decorations come down, but hardcore shoppers know when their dream season begins. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, has become the accepted if unofficial start time of the Christmas rush. It's a huge day for retailers but only the first of a roughly month-long extravaganza. And thanks to Abe Lincoln, who decreed Thanksgiving a national holiday, Franklin D. Roosevelt, who signed into law that it should fall on the fourth Thursday in November, and Pope Gregory XIII, who blessed the calendar we use by papal bull, 2012 has the longest possible shopping season. To explain: With Nov. 1 falling on Thursday, the fourth Thursday and …

Mom Takes All the Kids Shoplifting at Mayfair, Police Report Says

Woman fits her kids and a cousin for coats before trying to walk out of Macy's without paying, report says.

The twice-a-week Police Reports published in Wauwatosa Patch seldom lack for instances of retail theft at Mayfair Mall. Most rate only a line or two in the blotter. But now and then, some seem to call out for special attention, such as the two that follow. We begin with a woman who, with winter coming on, went to the mall to shop for her two children, their young cousin, and her brother, who, she would later tell police, needed a wardrobe update because he had just gotten out of jail. She didn't intend to pay, according to police reports and a criminal complaint. She did, however, want to make sure the kids' clothes fit. Latasha N. Alphonse, 24, was charged Wednesday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with one count of felony retail theft. …
