A 'soft opening' Wednesday night treated invited guests to a free show in a successful test of the theater's readiness to start its new run on Friday.
The Rosebud Cinema came back to life Wednesday night. The couches, clean and comfy, some of them new, were lined up in rows, ready for movie-goers to relax. The concessionaires were prepared to fill orders for drinks, snacks, appetizers and dinners. The projectionist pronounced all systems were go. The owner and managers of the Rosebud offered invited guests – many of them other local business owners – a sneak peek at the refreshed theater with a free showing of "The Bourne Ultimatum," third in the "Bourne" series. The fourth, and a current first-run release, "The Bourne Legacy," opens the latest chapter in the Rosebud's long history this weekend. After major studio make, neighborhood screen will show locally produced film as testament to its roots.
Action... suspense.... thrills! The marquee lettering is up, announcing that the Rosebud Cinema will open Aug. 31 with "The Bourne Legacy," the fourth in that series of hold-your-breath films. But even though it's the much-anticipated opener – or reopener – for the one-screen movie house on North Avenue, it's only one film. The real action, and some suspense, too, is behind the scenes. And the proprietors are thrilled to see how it will fly. The action is a new approach to running a small cinema or two in a world of multiplex theatre operations who have 18 screens per location and 800 overall. The suspense is in making that approach work – film after film after film, without letup – while also ramping up and amping up the food and beverage…

'Surprise' buyer outbids bank that held mortgage in sheriff's foreclosure sale, attorney says, offering more than half a million for both.
The owner of the Avalon Theater in Bay View bought the Rosebud and Times theaters at a sheriff's foreclosure sale Monday morning, an attorney for the mortgage holder said. Lee Barczak, president of Morgan Kenwood Advisors and owner of the Avalon, was the successful bidder, said Russell "Rusty" Long, who had represented Anchor Bank and Siegel-Gallagher, the property management company responsibile for the two theaters. Long said it was a "shocking surprise" to him that there was a successful bidder other than Anchor. Long had said earlier that he believed there was only the most remote possibility that anyone other than Anchor would purchase the movie houses. Barczak was "the successful bidder for both," Long said, offering to pay $275,000 …
