Gingrich Campaigns for Thompson in U.S. Senate Bid

GOP Senate hopeful and former Gov. Tommy Thompson picked up support from former House speaker and presidential candidate Newt Gingrich Tuesday.

With one week left before the Aug. 14 primaries, former Gov. Tommy Thompson, a frontrunner for the GOP nomination for Wisconsin U.S. senator, picked up support from a national figure Tuesday. Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker who made a run for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, campaigned with Thompson Tuesday morning in La Crosse, expressing his support. "I believe we need a senator who actually knows what they’re doing," the La Crosse Tribune quoted Gingrich as saying. "We need people who have the knowledge and experience and the skills of getting things done. … I believe he can reach across the aisle and actually help make the Senate effective in a way nobody else in this race could." According to the Tribune, Gingrich also …

GOP Contenders Say Religious Freedom at Stake in November Election

Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum blame Obama for declaring a 'war on religion' during appearance at faith-based forum in Waukesha. Event tops a full day of campaigning in Wisconsin.

Religious freedom and the American Dream itself are being threatened by the current administration under President Barack Obama — at least according to the three Republican presidential candidates who spoke before a largely evangelical crowd Saturday in Waukesha. It’s been some time since Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum gathered together at the same event, but the Faith and Freedom Coalition made it happen inside a packed hall at the Country Springs Hotel. U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, a Romney supporter, also spoke and received a raucous reception from the crowd. The event was the first of numerous stops in Wisconsin this weekend for the GOP contenders just four days before Tuesday's presidential primary. After speaking in Waukesha, …

@Jory -- Perhaps we should re-examine the ability of religious entities to make use of tax breaks to operate secular institutions and businesses. You want to accept the money from secular clients in hospitals and schools, and accept the efforts of your non-religious employees, then you need to follow the rules and stop hiding behind religion when it suits you.   more ›

Lagging in Polls, Gingrich Makes His Case to Marquette Students

Former House speaker, who is running in fourth place in the polls for Tuesday's GOP primary, blasts Obama in speech before lukewarm crowd.

Sticking primarily to his conservative fiscal and social message, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich stumped on Marquette University campus Thursday evening during what appears to be the sunset of his campaign. During the hour-long rally, the former speaker of the House spoke of several of his proposals, including creating a personal Social Security savings account system, establishing policies that would encourage energy independence, and creating a job-training requirement for those that receive unemployment. "If you sign up for money, you have to be trained by a business," he said. "Remember, 99 weeks is long enough to get an associate’s degree and yet, we have given millions of people 99 weeks of money."  Gringrich worn a …

New St. Norbert College/Wisconsin Public Radio Poll Keeps Romney on Top

The Republican presidential primary election is Tuesday, and a poll out today has Mitt Romney ahead of Rick Santorum by five points.

Another poll indicates that if Wisconsin voters cast ballots today, Mitt Romney would come out the winner in the Republican presidential primary. Using a sample of 403 likely voters, the St. Norbert-Wisconsin Public Radio survey shakes out like this: Voters were interviewed between March 24 to March 28 and the poll has a +/- 5 percent margin of error. The St. Norbert-Wisconsin Public Radio poll also asked respondents their top reason(s) for supporting their candidate. Not surprisingly, voters who participated in the survey named jobs and the economy their number one concern. Healthcare and the budget, including the deficit, taxes and spending, round out the top three. While Santorum led Romney by double digits late last month, March …

A new poll keeps Mitt Romney tops in the minds of Wisconsin voters when it comes to the Republican presidential nomination. In a new survey released Tuesday from Marquette University, former Gov. Mitt Romney is ahead of former Sen. Rick Santorum, 39 to 31 percent, respectively. Congressman Ron Paul pulled in 11 percent and former Congressman Newt Gingrich comes in at five percent. Just last week a poll from Rasmussen Reports had Romney leading Santorum 46 percent to 33 percent, but polls last month, from both Marquette University and Public Policy Polling each had Santorum in the lead by double-digits. "We think it's encouraging, but it's only a poll," said Ted Kanavas, state director for the Romney campaign. "You know, Wisconsin is a …
