17-Year-Old Racking Up State Charges of Theft

A Milwaukee teenager was arrested at the Wauwatosa Kmart, and investigators learned she's already been in the court system more than once.

A 17-year-old Milwaukee girl charged with theft from a Wauwatosa department store now has three such cases pending at the state level, court records show. Ebony Champaigne Dancer was charged Friday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with retail theft as a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to nine months in jail. At 9:29 p.m. Thursday, Dancer was arrested for theft and bail jumping at Kmart, 3201 N. Mayfair Rd., after she tried to leave the store with seven items worth $104 hidden in her purse, which contained a foil-lined booster bag. She had been spotted concealing the merchandise, according to a criminal complaint. Dancer told police she was planning to sell the items for cash. A record check showed she already had two pending retail …

3 Pre-Teens Taken In for Macy's Shoplifting Spree

Girls as young as 11 try to outfit themselves under their own clothing but attract plenty of attention in doing so at the Mayfair Mall store.

It takes something to stand out from the parade of retail theft reports that marches through the weekly police blotter. In this case, tender age. At 4 p.m. Friday, three Milwaukee girls, two of them 12 years old and the third just 11, were arrested for theft from Macy’s at Mayfair Mall after they drew suspicion for randomly selecting clothing without checking prices or sizes. They headed toward the fitting rooms, so a female loss prevention officer was sent to quickly check that the rooms were empty of merchandise. All three girls crowded into the same fitting room. The security agent could see beneath the divider that they were pulling off their pants, pulling on unpaid-for pants, then putting their own back on. They were stopped as they …

Brookfield Woman Narrowly Avoids Felony Count in Mayfair Jewelry Theft

Tosa police wanted a more serious charge, but district attorney settles for a Class A misdemeanor.

A Brookfield woman could have been charged with a felony for shoplifting a load of jewelry at Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa, but instead she faces a serious misdemeanor count of theft, according to police reports and court documents. Jane Elizabeth Montgomery, 28, was charged Thursday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with "intentionally taking" less than $500 worth of property, punishable by up to nine months in jail. But according to police reports, Montgomery actually attempted to steal about twice that amount, in retail value, and the department requested a felony count that could have been punished with up to three years and six months in prison. At 9:20 p.m., last Monday, Montgomery was arrested on suspicion of theft from Boston Store at…

Shoplifting Stop Leads to Narcotics Bust Instead

Repeat drug felon accompanies friend on mall shoplifting excursion – while holding illicit Oxycodone stash and a sales ledger.

The criminal mind is often devious – but sometimes... eh, not so much. A man with multiple felony convictions, and out on bail for a pending felony drug charge, made the mistake of hanging too close to a companion who stole a pair of sunglasses at Mayfair Mall – while, police say, he was himself holding a stash of illegal narcotics with a handwritten ledger of recent sales. Vaughn Caruth Gilmer, 32, of Milwaukee was charged Tuesday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with one count of possession of narcotic drugs and one count of felony bail jumping. If convicted, he faces up to 4½ years in prison and $20,000 in fines. According to police reports and the criminal complaint: At 4:13 p.m. last Saturday, police were called to the area of …

Two Chose Poor Way to Get Work at Mayfair

Young women can now put 'have first-hand knowledge of store loss-prevention methods' on their retail resumes.

Two young Milwaukee women spent a couple hours filling out job applications at a number of Mayfair Mall stores – and then, with some time still on their hands, went on a shoplifting spree, police say. At 8:56 p.m. Friday, two Milwaukee women, one 19 and one 20, were arrested on suspicion of theft at Macy’s in Mayfair Mall after they were seen on camera vigorously stuffing numerous children’s items into shopping bags, with no apparent awareness that they might be being watched. They were detained as they left the store. The younger woman had six items worth $237 retail value, the older had 11 items worth $390.98. Each had one prior conviction for retail theft. In separate, voluntary statements, each woman said they had come to the mall to…

DA Adds Disorderly Conduct to Charges Facing Chronic Thief

Public battle with store security officer over being detained for police nets her an additional count besides theft and jumping bail.

An assistant district attorney who reviewed a case brought by the Wauwatosa police against a habitual shoplifter not only agreed with the charges they sought but also tacked on another. Michelle Renae Jordan, 44, of Milwaukee was charged Saturday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with theft and bail jumping, as police requested, and also with disorderly conduct for publicly fighting with a drug store security officer. All the charges carry an enhancer as a repeat offender. Jordan was arrested Thursday at CVS Pharmacy, 7520 Blue Mound Rd., after she tried to leave the store with $55.95 worth of nail care products and children's slippers hidden in her purse. She threw down the items and tried to claim she'd never had them, but the store …

Job Applicant Is Just Who Target Is Looking For

Store staff watches as shoplifter stops to fill out an application for a job, using his real name and contact information.

This is not going to look good on his future resume. At 11:46 a.m.Thursday, Wauwatosa police were called to Target, 3900 N. 124th St., to seek a retail theft suspect who was last seen getting on an eastbound bus on West Capitol Drive. By the time officers arrived, they reported, “the bus was long gone.” A store security staffer told them that a man had been seen selecting two cans of baby formula and then heading for the customer service counter. When he got there, the cans were no longer in sight. The man then asked for a job application and sat down for 45 minutes while filling it out. During that time, he set one can of formula on a cart next to him, but the store officer couldn’t tell where he had had it concealed. When he was done …

Does that logic apply to the all the people recently stealing large bottles of vodka, too? It's not easily concealed so they must be stealing it out of necessity? It is kind of pathetic that anyone would feel that need considering the billions we spend on providing food for the hungry, the billions more in charitable programs to provide more food, and the millions in Wisconsin alone on …   more ›

Police Reports: Contractor Bilks Homeowner on Repair Job

Resident is out $4,000 he advanced Waukesha man to replace his windows; contractor has history of walking off the job.

A Wauwatosa man who needed new windows trusted an unfamiliar contractor to do the job and advanced him the cash. You can probably guess the rest. A resident of the 2200 block of North 106th Street reported to Wauwatosa police last Friday that he had been the victim of theft by fraud by a contractor. He told officers that he needed to replace windows in his home and that his sons had recommended a man for the job. The man stopped by, gave his estimate, and said he needed money up front to buy the windows. The balance for installation would be due after the job was done. The victim said he had paid the Waukesha man $4,000 in advance on a $6,600 contract signed in November to replace eight windows in his home. Weeks went by, he said, and the …

Teen Charged After Being Busted at Mayfair Twice in Three Days

Suspect is caught trying to steal hundreds of dollars worth of goods from two stores in the mall within days of each other.

A Milwaukee woman is facing charges after she was foiled in two large shoplifting capers within days of each other at Mayfair Mall. Star Valerie Sanders, 19, was charged Thursday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with two counts of retail theft. If convicted, she faces up to 18 months in prison and $20,000 in fines. According to the criminal complaints: On Feb. 28, security officers at Macy’s spotted Sanders take a large number of clothing items into the dressing room area, then emerge later with none of the items in her hands. She then went to another department and took 14 infant clothing items and walked back to the changing rooms where she emerged later with none of the items visible. Sanders was stopped at the exit of the store and …

Mass Arrest Follows Another Mass Theft at Mayfair

Eight youths taken into custody as they try to make their escape on county bus.

A group of youths planned and carried out another mass "grab and run" shoplifting spree Friday at Mayfair Mall, but this time instead of arranging their rendezvous on Facebook, they used another network — the county bus system. Most of them were arrested after an evening that began with them being tossed off one bus for rowdy behavior and being captured on another for stealing. According to police reports: At 7:36 p.m., a Milwaukee County bus driver reported that after he put eight to 10 disorderly juveniles off his bus at North 60th Street and West North Avenue, several of them stood in front of the bus to keep him from leaving while another kicked out the glass in the lower right door panel. The driver said that one of them had also …

If you remove the bus line from Mayfair mall, I'd bet that retail sales would be down 5%, but shoplifting would be down 95%. Stores would probably break even because a net gain with the removal of the Ghetto to Tosa crime shuttle, aka, the bus. Example: out of $50,000 weekly sales, a store may lose 5% in sales, or $2500, but based on a corresponding gain in losing an example $2500 shoplifting …   more ›
