Opening Day Drunk Driving Arrests Include One Very Wrong Turn Onto Rails

Man takes a sharp right that turns out to be way wrong when he finds himself driving, and then stuck, on railroad tracks in the Village.

Wauwatosa police were out in force Friday to monitor sobriety on the Brewers' Opening Day, and their night ended with a situation that might have seemed amusing if it weren't so dangerous. At 10:36 p.m., a 26-year-old Oconomowoc man was arrested for drunken driving, first offense, after he drove onto the railroad tracks east of Harwood Avenue in the Village and got stuck. A caller from Cafe Hollander told police he had been sitting in the lower level of the restaurant when he saw the driver turn up the tracks and drive about 50 feet before stalling. He said he was watching the man reeling drunkenly and yelling about his plight while he tried to push his car off the tracks. Police had to alert the Canadian Pacific to shut down the line …

Tosa Police Offer Intoxicated Brookfield Man a Break, But He Fails to Take It

Given a chance to call for a ride home instead of being given a handcuffed ride to the police station, driver waits two minutes and then puts the key back in the ignition.

Wauwatosa police made a rare, generous offer early Saturday to an obviously intoxicated driver who was poised to leave a parking lot behind the wheel of his car: Stop right here, officers said, and call for a ride or a taxi and you won't be arrested. The man's son, who was with him, did call his mother to give them a ride home, but long before she could get there, his dad, a 58-year-old Brookfield man, threw all caution to the wind. According to the police report, two Wauwatosa police officers were conducting a walk-through at Mo’s Irish Pub, 10842 Blue Mound Rd., a little before 2 a.m., and the manager told them he had just ejected two men who were highly intoxicated and should not be driving. He said the two had gotten upset when they …

That's not Wisconsin law, buddy. As a retired officer, I can tell you that anyone can be arrested for driving a car, no matter how far, on a public parking lot as long as it is open to the public. Others had it absolutely right. That was a terrible decision by the officer, dangerous to the public he is sworn to protect. Or it was a lazy one. Either option is unacceptable.   more ›

Four First-Time Drunken Drivers Reeled in Over Four Nights

All those arrested were from elsewhere, including a Waukesha woman wearing sunglasses at night.

Wauwatosa police arrested drunken drivers on each of four successive nights beginning Thursday, and none of the drivers was a Tosa resident. It was the first operating while intoxicated offense for each of them. All presented interesting cases of why it's dangerous, illegal and not very smart to drive after drinking: a man passed out in traffic; a woman speeding past a waiting police officer at more than twice the speed limit; a woman wearing sunglasses in the dark; and a man who hit a parked car and fled, not knowing he'd lost his own license plate at the scene. At 2:31 a.m. Sunday, a 23-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested for drunken driving, first offense, after he was found asleep at the wheel while stopped at the traffic light on …
