Tosa Beer Garden Gets a Nod, But for Shorter Hours

Questions about overlapping hours of alcohol sales with children's open swimming prompt Plan Commission to recommend a one-hour later opening.

A summer beer garden outside Tosa Pool in Hoyt Park got the approval of the Plan Commission on Monday night, but with slightly amended hours of operation. In a unanimous if somewhat hesitant vote, commissioners also recommended a review of the beer garden 90 days after its opening this summer, expected in July. The Tosa Pool board and administration, which would operate the beer garden, had asked to be open from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Based on the hours of the pool – which has open swimming until 4:30 p.m. on weekdays – the commission recommended the opening of the beer garden be delayed until 4 p.m. The Hoyt Park beer garden is modeled on the success of the Milwaukee County Parks' first year of operation of the Estabrook …

Prosit! Tosa Pool Plans Summer Beer Garden

'The Landing' is a Tosa idea for Tosa Pool, but it's much in keeping with Milwaukee County Parks' initiative to bring back traditional beer gardens beginning with its successful Estabrook Park experiment.

The Friends of Hoyt Park and Pool vowed to "bring summer back to Wauwatosa" in rebuilding Tosa Pool, a 100-year-old tradition as a local swimming hole. Now, the Friends are reaching back even farther into history with a plan to add an old-fashioned German beer garden to the summer entertainment. "The Landing" will become a new tradition for Hoyt Park and Tosa Pool, if Wauwatosa and Milwaukee County agree in a parallel permitting process. "We are working on it," said Mary Pluta, communications director for the Friends group that manages the pool. "We went to the Design Review Board and were approved, and next we have to get a conditional use permit." There is also county approval involved because Hoyt Park is Milwaukee County property, as …

Kimberly, you are perfectly right to bring up this point – I knew somebody would, and it's a welcome discussion. As someone who has done quite a bit of research on beer gardens (used to be the beer writer for the Journal Sentinel), I believe they represent, in their true traditional sense, the right approach, given that beer is here and likely to stay. In the German (and old Milwaukee) traditions…   more ›

Final Touches Make Tosa Pool Ready for the Plunge

Pool at Hoyt Park will be warm Saturday even if the weather isn't.

As of Thursday morning, the forecast for Saturday was 70 degrees and sunny. But by noon, it had changed to 64 and overcast with a chance of showers. Not to worry. The water in the brand-new Tosa Pool at Hoyt Park should be warm enough to make you forget this chilly spring and look forward to summer days. The pool is filled, the heat is on, and Wauwatosa's new star attraction will open on schedule Saturday at 11 a.m. for the general public and 10 a.m. for members. "We started filling it Friday, and I think it was full sometime Sunday," said Tami Schlickman, executive director of the Friends of Hoyt Park & Pool, the group that organized a successful $8 million campaign to rebuild the pool. "We're heating it, and our target is 80 to 84 …

Denise Lindberg and the Friends group really deserve big kudos for pulling this off! I'll be honest...I was skeptical whether this would ever become a reality, but the community rallied together to make it happen!   more ›
