If set-up accident scene doesn't resonate with all students, followup film and testimonials do, as pre-Prom documentary of alcohol-related deaths hits home.
An eleborate mock crash scene set up Thursday morning at Wauwatosa East High School was only the beginning of an intensive two-day course of events designed to drive home the danger of mixing alcohol and automobiles. For some students, Thursday's mockup didn't quite live up to its billing in shock value: It was a little too staged, they thought. They were kept at a distance while firefighters and police officers swarmed around two smashed-up cars that supposedly contained friends of theirs – but they were barely visible. And then, too, the scene was crawling with camera operators intruding on every scene, poking lenses between paramedics and victims, police and perpetrators. It was a little shocking just knowing that was your friend out …

Two Wauwatosa East High students discussed a variety of plans to plant bombs in the school before being overheard and reported, according to a story on Today's TMJ4 based on police reports released Friday. Wauwatosa Patch reported on April 29, a Monday, when parents were first notified by the School District, that a bomb scare had been uncovered late the previous Friday and that police were investigating more than one student's involvement. At the time, the School District announced, "Last Friday, after the conclusion of the school day, the District was made aware of a rumored bomb threat against East High School." The now-released police reports detail in more than 50 pages the two boys' admissions of discussing four different bombing …

McKinley and Eisenhower elementary schools schedule events Wednesday to promote Safe Routes to School. Bike riding is the star of the day, but at Eisenhower, unique challenges call for unique solutions – and one parent has an answer.
Wednesday is National Bike to School Day, and of the 45 registered events in Wisconsin, two are in the "Sensational Sixth" district of Wauwatosa: McKinley Elementary School is celebrating its second annual Bike to School Day and Eisenhower Elementary is holding its first. McKinley Bike to School Day, led off by its Safe Routes to School founder, parent Sarah Lerand, will feature before- and after-school bike helmet-fittings, at 7:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. The afternoon session will be headlined with a bike inspection presentation by Jessica Binder of the Wisconsin Bike Federation at 2 p.m. The Wauwatosa Police Department will be at McKinley in the morning to advise, assist and support, and the Wauwatosa Fire Department will do the same in the …

Weber's tenure has been marked by her advocacy for Wauwatosa's children and steady hand in setting policy and hiring leadership in the Tosa School District.
After 37 years on the Wauwatosa School Board, Lois Weber resigned Monday night. Elected in 1976, Weber has been a continuous presence on the seven-member board and has served a number of terms as president, most recently from 2011 through 2012. During that leadership term, her last as an officer, Weber guided the board through what she called the most challenging time in her own memory, as the District faced a $6 million budget gap during the protracted battle in Madison over Act 10. "Lois, when you do the math, served for 37 years," said current board president Michael Meier. "The collective experience of the rest of the board is 39 years. "She apprenticed everybody on the board right now. We all learned the job from her." "We can fill …

Three days after direct bomb threat at West High, a rumored bomb plan at East is uncovered, but classes resumed Monday with assurances of safety, and the School District says a joint investigation with police has identified suspect students.
Days after a bomb threat was made at Wauwatosa West High School, another was made Friday at East High, according to the School District, but this time students believed to be involved were identified quickly. While the threat at West was made in the form of a written statement left late Tuesday in a bathroom, the one at East came as a tip from what must have been some loose talk. A letter to parents or guardians of East students sent at 4:14 p.m. Monday begins: "Last Friday, after the conclusion of the school day, the District was made aware of a rumored bomb threat against East High School." The Wauwatosa police were called and a joint investigation ensued. While the district letter does not say how, and no approved police report was …

As online registration for summer programs opened at 8 a.m. Saturday, a software system put many into virtual gridlock, with some still lost in cyberspace. The Rec Department director said he's trying to fulfill as many requests as possible.
Technicians are trying to get to the bottom of a system crash that paralyzed the Wauwatosa Recreation Department's online registration system when it opened Saturday morning and kept scores of residents from getting classes they wanted. Rick Beattie, director of the Rec Department, said Monday it's still uncertain why the system tanked during the first two hours or so of registration, but he's personally focused on helping those who were locked out get satisfaction. "We have our School District IT Department working with the software provider to find out what happened," Beattie said. "They're responsible for load-testing the system. We're still struggling to know what caused the meltdown Saturday morning." The software in use is not new …

Despite changes in benchmarks for Wisconsin statewide reading and math tests, Wauwatosa students continue to perform higher than the statewide norms.
Use Patch's interactive database to see the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examinations scores in Wauwatosa and other area districts for the last three years. Students in the Wauwatosa School District saw overall lower scores in statewide math and reading tests this year, but those changes are almost entirely due to tough new standards that kicked in this year. In Wauwatosa, 51.6 percent of the students who took the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examinations (WKCE) in November 2012 scored at proficient or advanced in reading. That's compared to 88.1 percent who hit that mark in 2011. The 2012-13 results were released last week. In math, 66 percent of Wauwatosa students were proficient or better this year, compared to 86.7 percent last…

McKenna Nerone's rape survivors awareness project draws wide public attention, but it also spurs individual victims to speak up for themselves, knowing someone who cares is listening.
Wauwatosa Mayor Kathy Ehley wore jeans to work Wednesday. So did Tosa East High Principal Nick Hughes. And Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. And Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen. They encouraged their employees to do the same – in Tosa, all those not in uniform, Ehley said. All because Tosa East High itself also wore jeans – 1,050 pairs of them, covering the campus fence to call startling attention to Denim Day, a day to remember and support survivors of rape. McKenna Nerone promised that her senior community service project would draw attention, and it did. Drivers on Wauwatosa Avenue slowed and stared. Those who were expecting something – perhaps not sure what – honked in appreciation of McKenna's work. For weeks, McKenna has been …

Written threat found in bathroom Tuesday warning of bomb on Wednesday prompts canceling of evening classes, but morning sessions were being held under police watch.
A written bomb threat found in a Wauwatosa West High School bathroom late Tuesday prompted police surveillance and an investigation, but classes were being held Wednesday morning as scheduled. The threat apparently said a bomb would be in the school on Wednesday. Milwaukee County sheriff's deputies conducted a sweep of the school with bomb-sniffing dogs and found nothing. According to Police Lt. Chris Fox, the School District sent an email notice to all West parents and guardians Tuesday night alerting them to the threat. Parents were told it was their decision whether to send their children to school, Fox said. Parents were also advised to talk to their kids about the long-term ramifications faced be those who make such threats, Fox said…

Pair met up in a stairwell in the middle of the school day, daily for two weeks, girl tells authorities, but she complained when he tried to go too far.
A 13-year-old girl told a teacher she was sexually assaulted by a 12-year-old boy in a stairwell during lunch period at Longfellow Middle School, and later told investigators that it wasn't the first time, according to police reports. In fact, the girl told a social worker and police officers, she and the boy had been meeting daily in the stairwell just off the cafeteria for two weeks, engaging in varying degrees of physical contact, before he went too far and made her uncomfortable. A police report described the location as "just outside the cafeteria" in "an alternate and enclosed stairwell that is seldom used." According to the reports: Just after the lunch period on March 14, the girl went to a teacher and said that the boy had made …

I remember similar events more than 20 years ago. Although I took them seriously, I had made up my mind to live responsibly beforehand so it didn't change me. Many of the other members of my class who didn't care about responsibility did not take it seriously and went on to talk about how much fun they had with their underage drinking and driving escapades. So these events had no noticeable …   more ›
