Wauwatosa West had lost 11 in a row but didn't quit when it fell behind its city rival, and came back for a one-run softball victory.
Megan O’Rourke’s two-run double was the big hit as Wauwatosa West rallied from a 4-1 deficit to defeat crosstown rival Wauwatosa East 5-4 in softball on Wednesday. The Trojans (3-11) had lost 11 in a row and looked to be in deep trouble again in the sixth. East foiled a squeeze bunt with runners at second and third, throwing the runner out at home for the second out. But O’Rourke pulled one just inside the third base line to make the score 4-3. Moments later, a bases-loaded walk sent home the tying run. Dani Savignac scored the winning run in the seventh from second base. Fifty-five Wisconsin high schools made The Daily Beast and Newsweek's ranking of America's Best High Schools, which include Wauwatosa East and West.
Wauwatosa East and West have ranked in Newsweek's list of America's Best High Schools. In the national ranking of 2,000 high schools, Wauwatosa East ranked 1065 and Wauwatosa West ranked 1220. All the data analyzed was self-reported by each school for the 2011–12 school year. Over 5,000 high schools were invited to participate in the survey this year, and nearly 2,500 responded. Newsweek and The Daily Beast have compiled this list for the past two years and each year the methodlogy is tweaked. This year the methodology weighed the percentages of four-year, on-time graduation rate (25 percent); 2011 graduates who were accepted to college (25 percent); AP/IB/AICE tests per student (25 percent); average SAT and/or ACT score (10 percent); …

Written threat found in bathroom Tuesday warning of bomb on Wednesday prompts canceling of evening classes, but morning sessions were being held under police watch.
A written bomb threat found in a Wauwatosa West High School bathroom late Tuesday prompted police surveillance and an investigation, but classes were being held Wednesday morning as scheduled. The threat apparently said a bomb would be in the school on Wednesday. Milwaukee County sheriff's deputies conducted a sweep of the school with bomb-sniffing dogs and found nothing. According to Police Lt. Chris Fox, the School District sent an email notice to all West parents and guardians Tuesday night alerting them to the threat. Parents were told it was their decision whether to send their children to school, Fox said. High school's new theater director promises 'a pretty fantastic show.'
Note: This story was wrtten for Patch by contributor Janice Burch The musical may be best known for its signature song, “One Singular Sensation,” but the song and dance in Wauwatosa West’s A Chorus Line, which opens at 7 p.m. Friday at Wauwatosa West High School, is plural in its sensational student talent. Seventeen dancers vying for eight spots in a Broadway chorus line set the story for one of the most famous musicals ever. A Chorus Line opened on Broadway in 1975, with music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban and a book by James Kirkwood, Jr. and Nicholas Dante. Andrew Stadler was a standout soccer player for Wauwatosa West, and then for George Washington University. Patch catches up with him in Sweden as he prepares for another pro season.
Wauwatosa West graduate Andy Stadler is preparing to begin his fourth season of professional soccer thousands of miles away from his hometown. The 25-year-old is an attacking midfielder for Sandvikens IF, a third-division team in Sandviken, a small town in south-central Sweden. He arrived there after starring for the Trojans and then for George Washington University. Stadler led George Washington in scoring as a sophomore, junior and senior, and was first-team All-Mid-Atlantic Region as a junior and senior. He had dreams of getting a shot at Major League Soccer but said a couple of hamstring injuries made that difficult. Students were charged with building a complex machine to complete a simple task in at least 20 steps.
Wauwatosa West was one of 20 Wisconsin high schools that competed Friday in the 2013 Milwaukee Regional Rube Goldberg Machine Contest at Waukesha County Technical College. The competition involves creating complex machines to complete a simple task. This year’s task was to hammer a nail. The contest challenges students to take an elementary task and provide a complicated solution using ordinary objects and mechanical gadgets — in 20 steps or more. Machines are required to be no larger than 6 feet by 6 feet by 6 feet. Janesville Craig was the winner; Waunakee was second and Antigo third. Janesville Craig and Waunakee will advance to the national Rube Goldberg Machine Contest on March 16, also at WCTC.

Police say the 17-year-old admitted taking a fellow student's backpack and removing a school iPad, which was later sold.
A 17-year-old Wauwatosa West High School student accused of stealing a another student's backpack containing a school-owned iPad and textbooks has been criminally charged. Jeffery T. Robinson was charged Wednesday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with one count of theft. If convicted, he could face up to nine months in jail and $10,000 in fines. According to police reports and the criminal court complaint: On Nov. 12, a student reported to the school office that his backpack had disappeared after he left it unattended near an exit during the last hour of classes. By Mary Phillips for EFW Thanks to a grant from the Education Foundation of Wauwatosa (EFW), Wauwatosa West High School is home to Gallery 114, a gallery featuring artwork and writing submitted by Wauwatosa West students. While art teacher Jessica Belich is the force behind the creation of the gallery, she says it is now run by the students. Senior Isaac Micheal is the gallery director and junior Maureen Vento is the gallery assistant. In addition to creating a space to showcase the talents of Wauwatosa West students, Gallery 114 was developed as a way to give real world work experience in managing the activities of an art gallery. Banquet gathering recognizes contributions and leadership of seniors and the high hopes inspired by successful juniors and sophomores ready to take over next season.
The 2012 Wauwatosa West Trojan football team was honored with nine player-selections for First Team All-Conference and nine additional selections for Honorable Mention All-Conference. All-Conference selections were made by Woodland Conference coaches. The Tosa West honoree total (18) ranks them second in team-wide recognition in the Conference. Greendale had 19 recognized and conference champ Pewaukee had 16. Conference recognition was announced Nov. 12 by Head Coach Matt Good at the post-season Trojan Football Banquet.
