Swing City: Wauwatosa Perfectly Purple in Tuesday's Primary

While fake candidates and some intentional cross-ticket voting may have occurred, the raw numbers say Tosa is evenly split.

If Tuesday's two-way primary was in any way a test of where Wauwatosa might fall in the June 5 statewide recall election, the answer was: smack dab in the middle. With a solid turnout of 45 percent and a total of 14,299 ballots cast, votes for Democratic and Republican candidates were a split hair apart. In the primary for the governor's office, 7,061 votes, or 49.5 percent, went to Republicans and to one "fake" Democrat in the race, while 7,204, or 50.5 percent, went to real Democrats. A total of 14,265 votes were cast for that office. The lion's share of Republican votes and most gained by any candidate was the 6,910 total cast for Gov. Scott Walker. Another 125 Republican votes went to Arthur Kohl-Riggs, there were five write-ins, and …

Mayor Ehley Wastes No Time Shaking Up Wauwatosa Council Committees

Leadership of all key committees changes as new mayor takes office. See which aldermen were appointed to chair and vice-chair positions.

Among the greatest powers of the mayor is one he or she wields immediately upon taking office: the appointment of Common Council committees and the council member who will chair them. To City Hall insiders, committee assignments are the most important act of the mayor — committees, they say, are "where the real work gets done." And committee leadership assignments — chairmanships and vice-chairmanships — can set the agenda for that work. Mayor Kathy Ehley did not wait to get her feet wet, or even to be officially sworn in, before reconstituting council assignments. In a memo Tuesday, Ehley made her appointments, with some significant changes. Leadership will change in all of the five standing committees of the Common Council. Budget and …

Mayor Ehley Takes Office, Presiding Over Newly Constituted Council

Largely ceremonial meeting launches new course for city, with Ald. Dennis McBride taking the post of Common Council president.

With a bit of pomp and circumstance, the new mayor of Wauwatosa and a Common Council with three — soon to be four — new members was sworn to duty Tuesday night. Raising their right hands, seven aldermen either re-elected or newly elected took their oaths from City Clerk Carla Ledesma, each identifying themselves by name and district and then continuing in unison, "We who have been elected to the office of...." Absent from the swearing was Ald. Eric Meaux, who was elected but had then announced his resignation as he takes a new job away from the Milwaukee area. Kathy Ehley, now officially mayor, swore her fealty to Wauwatosa moments later, and then took over the chair to preside over the council from Ald. Dennis McBride — who had earlier …

Changing of the Guard: New Mayor, Aldermen to Be Sworn In

Incoming Mayor Ehley will preside over a Common Council with three new faces and, soon, one empty seat. You can attend or watch the proceedings broadcast live from City Hall.

There is little of the regular business of city government on the agenda Tuesday night for the Wauwatosa Common Council. Rather, the business is the governors themselves. Kathy Ehley will be sworn in as mayor to begin a four-year term, along with three new aldermen. Jim Moldenhauer in the 1st District, Greg Walz-Chojnacki in the 3rd District, and Joel Tilleson in the 5th District each won close races in the April 3 general election to take four-year seats on the council. The proceedings will be broadcast live from City Hall on cable Channel 25. The new council will soon have one empty chair, as District 2 Ald. Eric Meaux, who also served as council president and interim mayor since the departure of Jill Didier, has announced he will step …
