Three Hazardous Crossing Zones Get Assists from Schools, City, DOT

At least six schools could benefit from crossing rebuild and safety studies.

Joint efforts between three government entities will bring some needed attention to three Wauwatosa school crossing zones, with one slated for a colorful rebuilding next year and two more being studied for possible improvements. As part of the Zoo Interchange Project, the crossing at Glenview and West Wisconsin avenues will be updated in 2013, with full attention given to pedestrian safety, including broad, colored crosswalks. Meanwhile, West Center Street between North Mayfair Road and North 124th Street and North 100th Street between Ruby Avenue and the north city limits will be the subjects of safety studies this year, with recommendations for improvements to come. Those studies cover the routes leading to and past Madison Elementary …

Injury to Student Prompts Call for School Zone Safety Review

Longfellow seventh-grader suffered broken leg when driver passed car stopped for crossing guard.

Ald. Bobby Pantuso called Wednesday for a review of school zone safety after an accident Monday morning that left a Longfellow Middle School student with a broken leg. A school crossing guard was in position just after 7:30 a.m. on Wauwatosa Avenue at West Wright Street with a handheld stop sign and had stopped one southbound car while the 12-year-old boy was crossing. Another southbound driver failed to see the crossing guard and passed the stopped car on the right, striking the boy, according to Wauwatosa police. The driver, a 55-year-old woman, told police she thought the car was stopped to make a left turn. She said she drove that route nearly every day and was aware that it is a school zone. Another driver going south behind her said …

A common problem among drivers is speed and ignorance. I'm not sure of the fix for current drivers who feel annoyed by slowing down for humans crossing in front of them but I do know that I will teach, by practice, my …   more ›

School Corner Reconstruction a Good Thing at a Bad Time

Much safer crossings come about through a grant that arrived too late to complete work before school year.

Sometimes good things come with a price. Students, parents, teachers and staff at Jefferson Elementary School were more than a little miffed when, on the first day of school last week, contractors showed up and began demolishing the key corner crossings around the school. There was heavy equipment, noise and dust, and worse, it meant everyone, including very small children, had to walk around barricades and into the streets to get to and from school. One Jefferson teacher called it "idiotic" to schedule such critical work so close to the school at such a time "when they had all summer to do it." The scene was the same at Wilson Elementary School and St. Jude's. The most important crossing corners were being torn up and rebuilt at seemingly…

Grant money is needed to improve the traffic flow on Center Street and the neighboring side streets in front of Whitman, West and Eisenhower. Whoever thought it was a good idea to put three big schools so close to each other? It's a traffic nightmare.   more ›
